JOB SUMMARY: The Disabilities/Special Needs Specialist is responsible for ensuring that all services required as part of a child’s IEP are provided. The specialist is also responsible for the management of all elements of the agency’s handicap effort as required by Head Start Performance Standards, the policies and regulations as described in the Agency’s Disabilities/Special Needs Specialist Policies and Procedures and the requirements of the Public laws 94-142 and 99- 457. Disabilities/ Special Needs Specialists acts as a case manager for every Head Start child with a handicapping condition. Assist all children in emotional, cognitive, and social development toward social competence in coordination with education and other component activities.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, or related field. Experience working in an organized preschool program serving children with disabilities. Ability to work effectively with families of children with disabilities. Competent management skills including supervision and planning skills. Experience planning and implementing curricula for children with disabilities. Knowledge of available community resources. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
