Purpose of Agency: The American Red Cross is a humanitarian

organization, led by volunteers that provides

relief to victims of disasters and helps

people prevent, plan for and respond to

emergencies.

Services:

Direct Health Intervention – Free blood pressure screenings and follow-ups, as needed, are provided at a number of sites in Greenville each month.

Community Education (Health &Safety) – Health courses include Parenting, Babysitting, and Back Injury Prevention. A wide range of AIDS Education classes for youth, the workplace, the general public, the deaf, and at-risk groups are available. Safety courses include: CPR for the adult, infant, and child, Standard First Aid, Swimming and Water Safety Progression Courses, and Lifeguard Training. A special class for childcare providers may also be arranged through

the Red Cross. Classes can be held at work sites as well as in various community settings.

Disaster Relief–Disaster Services is a 24–hour program which coordinates all

assistance for disaster victims and provides immediate emergency relief,

including shelter, food, health services, damage assessment, and family services.

Disaster services provide speakers and brochures to educate the public about the

dangers of disaster, including fire. Corporate Disaster Planning Services is

available for businesses and industry to enable them to prepare their employees

and protest their property in the event of a disaster.

Emergency Communications and Related Services – Communications, financial

assistance, and social services are provided for members of the armed forces and

their families and veterans, in accordance with American Red Cross policies.

This service also maintains a database of volunteers with foreign language skills

who can help foreign visitors and community members who do not speak

English. Additionally, this service responds to international tracing requests to

locate individuals.

Personal Development – Designed for youth ages 17 and under, this program

teaches positive self–image, leadership skills, career options and skills to enable

youth to prevent, prepare for and cope with emergencies.

Job Training – Certified by the SC Department of Health and Environment

Control, the Nurse Assistant Training Course teaches the information and skills

that will enable Nurse Assistants to provide quality care for residents in longterm

facilities.

In a large natural disaster, Red Cross offers 24 hour service for emergency assistance and family fires. In a social disaster, Red Cross can refer individuals needing help to proper agencies. Red Cross is also available in most cases to help contact persons through the international Red Cross in times of natural disaster.

blindness. Individuals with severe visual

disability which will result in legal blindness

within 24-month period are also eligible for

services. Legal blindness must be verified

by an acceptable eye examination. There are

financial eligibility requirements for some

Services:

Vocational Rehabilitation – to assist blind and visually impaired clients in securing productive employment and achieving economic independence. The Commission for the Blind operates the Ellen Beach Mack Rehabilitation Center (EBMRC) in Columbia. This residential facility offers a variety of training programs including vocational rehabilitation, adjustment to blindness, vocational evaluation, training in the use of adaptive equipment, horti-therapy, and business enterprise. SCCB Vocational Rehabilitation clients can access independent living skills training at mini–centers in Spartanburg on the campus of the SC School for the Deaf and Blind and in the James C. Belissary Rehabilitation Center in Florence. Remaining areas throughout the state are served by Mobile Outreach Units.

Employment and Training Division – serves as a liaison between client and employer.

Business Enterprise Program (BEP) – offers employment for the blind while providing public and private locations with food service.

Low Vision Clinics –located in Charleston, Columbia, Florence, Spartanburg, and Walterboro, these clinics evaluate client’s low vision needs, provide training and prescribe magnifiers, glasses, and other aids designed to maximize remaining vision.

Client Transportation Program – transports clients to jobs, job interviews, medical appointments, related to SCCB services, interviews with Commission counselors, and to training activities sponsored by the Agency.

Independent Living and Mobile Outreach – services include simple adaptations made in participant’s homes and daily living skills instruction.

Media Center – transcribes print material into Braille, large print, or audio tape.

Volunteer Services – assigns volunteers to a variety of settings within the agency Disability Determination – cases are evaluated for referral into the Commission’s Vocational Rehabilitation, Children’s Services, and/or Prevention of Blindness Departments.
